Top 5 Cities to Move to in Virginia

Jon Fesmire | July 20, 2021 @ 12:00 AM

Virginia has a storied history, including being the home of founding fathers Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. It was named after Queen Elizabeth the First and was one of the original 13 American colonies. It has the second-highest concentration of technical workers out of the U.S. states, just behind California. It has four true seasons, with temperatures getting down into the 30s on average in the winter, and into the 80s in the summer.

Overall, Virginia is a beautiful place to live. If you’d like to live here, we have several places you may want to consider.

Vienna

Vienna is a quiet town with a population of 16,500 that’s just 30 minutes from Washington DC, the nation’s capital.

Visit the Freeman Store and Museum, which, since 1860, has served many functions, including a hospital, hotel, train depot, fire department, and now historic landmark. If you want to have some outdoor fun, head over to the Meadowlark Botanical Gardens or Scott’s Run Nature Preserve.

The median home value in Vienna is $662,200, while the median income is $143,276.

Bridgewater

If you’re looking for an affordable town in Virginia, Bridgewater is an excellent choice. It’s about as expensive as most of the U.S. and slightly less expensive than most of Virginia. Crime is low, 85% lower than the U.S. average, too.

About 6,00 people live in Bridgewater with a median household income of $56,764 and a median home value of $209,200.

Fields and trees surround Bridgewater, and there’s plenty of greenery in town as well. Main Street runs through town and provides access to shopping, restaurants, bars, and more. It’s also home to Bridgewater College, which includes the Rhodes School of Arts and Humanities.

Purcellville

This small town of 10,000 residents is 30% more expensive to live in than the U.S. average, but the median household income is also higher at $117,736. The median home value is in line with that at $426,500.

Purcellville is home to the Purcellville Wine and Food Festival where you can sample and purchase various wines, cheeses, and more. Watch the website for event information, as the organizers had to cancel the 2020 event due to COVID.

Falls Church

Visit Falls Church before you move here. This town of about 15,000 residents is a beautiful place to live, but with the average home value at $900,000, it’s expensive. The median household income though is $131,500.

While you’re here, take a 10-minute drive to Arlington and visit the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington House, and the Marine Corps War Memorial. Falls Church is just twenty minutes from Washington, DC, and all its historical monuments.

On Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon, head over to the Falls Church Farmers Market where dozens of local vendors sell their goods, including Catoctin Coffee, Hog Haven Farm, Laurel Grove Farms, Grace’s Pastries, and Grateful Gardeners. Get your fruits and vegetables, nuts, pastries, and more, and say hello to your neighbors.

Blacksburg

Now we come to the pleasant mountain town known as Blacksburg. The median household income here is 37% lower than the national average at $34,863, but homes aren’t especially expensive. The median home value is $276,500. Most people here rent, and the median rental price is just $964 per month.

Blacksburg enjoys a changing climate that doesn’t get too hot. Days reach about 81 degrees in the summer, and at night the temperature drops to about 60 degrees, while in the winter days get up to 50 degrees and down into the 20s. You’ll find several golf courses here, a skate park, and much more.
